The Covington Police
Department only accepts applications when a vacancy exist in the
department. When an opening does occur and applications are needed, the
department utilizes the Virginia Employment Commission located at 106 N.
Maple Avenue, Covington, Virginia 24426 with a local telephone number of
(540) 962-0983. All applications will be submitted through the Employment
Commission without exception.
Opening are announced in the Virginia Review
newspaper along with other newspapers and media as required by the Chief
of Police. Announcements will also be made via this website. Applications
will only be taken for a specific period of time as announced in the
vacancy announcement.
After the closing of the application period,
the department will check the backgrounds on all applicants
and then send letters to those applicants that qualify for further
consideration. Applicants will be required to take a written examination
under the supervision of department personnel and then pass a physical
agility test. Only those persons passing the written examination will move
on to the physical agility test and the remainder of the applicant process.
Those persons that pass the written
examination and the physical agility test will be scheduled for an initial
interview process. The initial interview will be conducted by a panel of
department personnel. After completion of the initial interview, finalist
will be determined and interviewed by the Chief of Police.
The applicant who is determined to be the
top candidate will be notified by telephone and given a conditional offer
of employment with the requirement of passing a physical
examination. Those persons not offered employment will be notified by
mail.
All persons hired by the department must be
certified police officers or possess the ability to complete the basic
police academy at the Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy in Salem,
Virginia. The academy is currently five months in length. Graduation from
the academy is required for continued employment with the
department.
Prior to and after completion of the
academy, officers must complete and pass a Field Training Program
administered under the direction of one of the department's field training
officers. Becoming a certified professional
police officer is a lengthy process that requires the desire and
dedication to want to serve our community. Law enforcement is a way of
life and demands a higher standard of life than required by others in our
