DUI Checkpoints

The Covington Division of Police routinely holds Drivers License and Sobriety Checkpoints at pre-selected locations throughout the City of Covington. The pre-selected locations are determined by the frequency of traffic accidents, driving under the Influence arrest and other data collected by the department. Drivers License and Sobriety Checkpoints are used to make the highways of the city safer for our citizens during all hours of the day and night.

The necessity of checkpoints is determined by the operations commander. He then establishes the date and time of the checkpoint. All checkpoints are preplanned and followed strict guidelines as provided by case law and departmental policy. Each checkpoint must be under the controlled by a department supervisor such as a sergeant or lieutenant. Sgt Dawson has been assigned as the supervisor in charge of coordinating and conducting DUI checkpoints.

Checkpoints are well marked and manned from six to ten officers as determined by the location, time of day, and traffic flow. Officers must receive training prior to being allowed to participate in checkpoints. After receiving the required training, officers may participate in the operation of checkpoint. Driver sobriety is not the only concern of  officers manning the checkpoints. Officers also look for other problems such as suspended or expired drivers license, equipment violations, failure to use child safety seats, current city decals and a host of other violations.

Checking for the sobriety of drivers will always be the main emphasis of the checkpoints, so be aware that a drivers license and sobriety checkpoints can be set up any time of the day or night throughout the city.
