The
Alleghany Highlands Drug Task Force was originally formed in 1990 by a cooperative
agreement between the Virginia State Police, Covington Police Department,
Clifton Forge Police Department, Alleghany County Sheriff's Department and
the Bath
County Sheriff's Department.
The original agreement provided for each agency to provide officers and
necessary assets needed to support the operations of the Drug Task Force.
Full time officers assigned to
the Task Force are sworn as Special Agents of the Virginia State Police with
the power to enforce and investigate drug related laws throughout the
Commonwealth of Virginia.
In 1998, the Highland County Sheriff's
Office joined as a member of the Highlands Drug Task Force and supports
the task force through annual fund contributions and the assignment of
a deputy to the Drug Task Force. Seizures of funds
and properties are split amount the agencies in the task force and the
Department of Criminal Justice Services after being awarded by the court.
The
Alleghany Highlands Drug Task Force was formed to assist local agencies in
the investigation of those persons illegally involved in the distribution
of controlled substances. Agents of the task force investigate crimes
involving the distribution of such drugs as Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin,
Methamphetamine, Ecstasy, GHB, and a variety of other controlled
substances. The Alleghany Highlands
Drug Task force consists of Virginia State Police Agents, deputies
from the Alleghany Sheriff's Office, officers from the Covington
Police Department, officers from the Clifton Forge Police Department,
deputies from the Bath County Sheriff's Office and the Highland County
Sheriff's office. Most officers on the
Drug Task Force work on a part time basis, while several are assigned full time
to illegal drug and narcotics investigations.
Drug
investigations depend on the cooperation between the citizens of the community
and agents of the drug task force. Any information from citizens concerning
the location of illegal drug distributions and those involved is
extremely important to all investigations. Any person having
information concerning the distribution of controlled substances may
submit
information via this web site by completing the "Drug Info
Hotline" form or e-mailing the task force via the e-mail address,
crimestoppers@covington.va.us .
Information may also be submitted by calling the Drug Task Force at (540)
965-6308 or by calling the Covington Police Department at (540) 965-3333.
The
Drug Task Force also needs the assistance of persons willing to work as
informants for agents investigating drug cases. Those persons wishing to assist
in investigations can contact the Task Force via the above listed methods,
although an interview is required, therefore your name, address and
telephone number is required. All information provided is completely
confidential. The illegal distribution
of controlled substance spans all facets of our society and is a precursor
to many other crimes committed in our community such as B & E's,
Larcenies and Assaults. The Alleghany Highlands Drug Task Force is
committed to improving the quality of life in our community, through the
enforcement of the Controlled Substance Act and all other drug
related laws in the Commonwealth of Virginia. |
